Music

Music is an important part of Vinehall school life and all Year groups are taught class music for an hour each week within the teaching timetable. In addition, children are encouraged to join choirs and most children learn at least one instrument.

Music features in the school’s termly calendar through a wide range of concerts, allowing every child who learns an instrument to perform, and in association with the drama department through large-scale musicals which are performed in the school theatre.

The music department is situated in a separate teaching block with practice rooms, three teaching rooms large enough for ensemble practices and a music technology lab, well-equipped with ICT to support the children’s music-making. The musicians also make good use of the school theatre for rehearsals and concerts.

Vinehall has a strong musical tradition and a fine reputation locally. Some children are attracted to Vinehall for the music alone and learn up to three instruments, going on to Public School with music scholarships.

We run two orchestras and a multitude of ensembles and children who learn an orchestral instrument are expected to participate in ensemble playing. There are many opportunities to perform and an assembly orchestra accompanies prep school assemblies. A House Music Competition attracts up to 300 entries and culminates in an extremely inclusive House Song and orchestra performance.

The school is also the centre for the local music society, which attracts leading international musicians to East Sussex in a series of seven chamber concerts each year.
