Geographical education should:
- Stimulate pupils' interest in their surroundings and in the variety of physical and human conditions on the Earth’s surface.
- Foster a sense of wonder at the processes of the world in action.
- Help develop an informed concern about the quality of the environment both now and for the future; and
- Enhance the sense of responsibility for the care of the Earth and its peoples.
(From DES Proposals for NC Working Group)
We in the Vinehall Geography Department try to achieve these broad aims of a good geographical education by using a variety of approaches in our teaching.
Approach:
A well-equipped geography room with interactive white board, DVD player, networked computer and internet access enables the department to use the latest technology, alongside the more traditional methods of teaching, to deliver the curriculum in an exciting and innovative way.
We believe that Geography should take place outside the classroom and a full programme of trips and visits enhance and support the learning experience.
Although governed to some extent by the constraints of Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations we also follow some less prescribed topics and themes allowing for the flexibility of staff / pupil interest and reaction to current world events.
The geography in Year 3 is a topic based approach with history but all other classes have a timetabled geography lesson with approximately 2 hours of curriculum time per teaching week.
