English
English

The philosophy of the English department at Vinehall is primarily to develop a love and understanding of the richness and diversity of the English language and its literature in an atmosphere where creativity can flourish.

We value books, and our impressive Millennium Library is a special building designed to inspire and motivate the pupils. Bookshelves sit alongside computers so that technology and literature are seen as mutually supportive.

Children are encouraged to express themselves imaginatively in the secure knowledge that they have been well grounded in the craft of writing.
Pupils are encouraged to discuss, debate and challenge views and ideas in a dynamic yet supportive environment.

The English Speaking Board examinations provide an exciting way for the children to express themselves articulately and feel confident about voicing their own thoughts and opinions.

English is about communication, the understanding and interpretation of language, and the clear expression of ideas. In the words of Professor Higgins from 'Pygmalion':
'Remember that you are a human being with a soul and the divine gift of articulate speech; that your native language is the language of Shakespeare and Milton and the Bible; and don’t sit there crooning like a bilious pigeon!'

Millennium Library

Vinehall boasts a wonderful selection of challenging and innovative texts, both fiction and non-fiction; in fact the library is probably one of the finest prep school libraries in the country. An integral part of the library is the impressive range of computers available to the pupils, both in single work stations and designated suites.
