Classics

Rooms: The Latin Quarter (R 20 and 21)

Classes:
A variety of courses is available in a fully equipped department, which can therefore cater for pupils of all abilities.

  • Year 4: Greek Mythology, and Roman Legends from CE syllabus.
  • Year 5 – 8: Latin to Scholarship and CE.
  • Year 7 & 8: Classical Greek to Scholarship and CE.
  • Year 8: Modern Greek (post Scholarship).

Courses:

  • Minimus Books 1 and 2.
  • Disce Latinum Books 1 and 2.
  • Latin Prep books 1 and 2 (3 to follow when published).
  • Scholars use “From CE to GCSE” by M. Siegel in year 8.

The number of new courses available and the thousands of copies, sold regularly, of material relating to the study of all aspects of Classics, are indications that the reasons for the inclusion of this very important subject in the curriculum are as strong as they ever were; indeed in these times when employers are complaining of the poor standard of English from school leavers, it is clear that not enough pupils are undergoing the rigorous training in language, which a decent course in Latin provides.
The Classical culture going back to the Greeks through the Romans is the bedrock of Western civilisation and pupils at Vinehall are privileged to be able to study not only the language but also the way of life of both civilisations.
