Classics is a highly valued and popular subject area at Vinehall. We offer topics of interest to every child regardless of their age and ability and there is a particular emphasis on ICT using the very latest web resources. All children start Latin lessons in Year 4 where they are introduced to the thrills and excitement of the Greek myths. They study the Latin language from Year 5 using the popular and internationally acclaimed "Minimus" book series and continue to the rigorous Common Entrance or Scholarship standards which are expected in Year 8. Throughout this time Latin provides an excellent foundation for the study of English, French and other modern languages because it teaches children how languages work and reinforces grammar and spelling. Pupils are welcome to start optional Greek lessons in Year 7, a language which brings its own treasure trove of connections with English and they always enjoy the challenge of learning a whole new alphabet. Over 50% of English words are derived from Latin and Greek, hardly the "dead languages" they are often said to be. We make every effort to widen pupils' general knowledge of the Classical world and this links well with their studies in many other areas of the curriculum such as history, English literature, art and drama. Each year we also make regular visits to local Roman sites which always help to bring alive the study of Roman Britain. Classical subjects promote attention to detail, problem solving and clear, succinct communication skills and we believe that every pupil will gain something tangible from their study at Vinehall whether it be a genuine enjoyment of the Latin language or a deep rooted fascination for the Greek myths. |
