Mathematics

The mathematics department is very well resourced and a wide variety of materials and approaches are implemented in delivering the curriculum. There are three mathematics sets in each year group and supplementary assistance is provided on a one-to-one basis for those pupils with specific learning difficulties. Many of the pupils in set one in Years 6, 7 and 8 may well be working towards scholarship standard papers for their senior schools in Year 8 and additional topics are introduced to meet the needs of those examinations.

Below are lists of the main topics covered within each year group. There is a particular emphasis on the learning of times-table facts in Years 3, 4 and 5 plus time given to recreational puzzles and conundrums to stimulate young minds and encourage and enable the pupils to experience the delight of solving tricky problems.

Year 3

Place value, addition and subtraction, length, 2-D shape, symmetry, direction, properties of number, time, multiplication and division, fractions, handling data, 3-D shape, capacity, weight, angles, co-ordinates.

Year 4

Place value, addition an subtraction, length, mass, time, 2-D shape, properties of number, multiplication and division, fractions, frequency tables, capacity, area, symmetry, 3-D shape, pictograms and bar graphs, direction, perimeter, angles, co-ordinates, decimals, sets.

Year 5

Place value, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, bar line graphs, 2-D shape, length, mass, addition and subtraction, properties of number, 3-D shape, area and perimeter, line graphs, percentages, ratio and proportion, probability, angles, capacity.

Year 6

Sequences, number machines, written calculations, 3-D shape and nets, decimals, rounding, area and perimeter, fractions, 2-D shape, co-ordinates, rules of algebra, percentages, mental methods, puzzles, properties of number, BIDMAS, using a calculator, metric and imperial units, handling data, calculating angles, ratio and proportion, constructions, solving equations, straight line graphs, problem solving, rotations, reflections and transformations, long multiplication and division, averages and range, negative numbers, mathematical reasoning, probability, formulae.

Many of our pupils in Years 5 and 6 compete in the Primary Mathematics Challenge which is organised by the Mathematical Association and our more able pupils in Years 6, 7 and 8 are entered for the UK Junior Mathematical Challenge which is organised by the UK Mathematics Trust.
